Dr. John N. Williams was appointed the sixth Dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in May 2005. Before joining the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, Williams was Dean of the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry from January 1999 to May 2005. He served for the previous seven years as Associate Dean of Educational Programs at Louisville and three years in a concurrent position as Assistant University Provost. Williams received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Transylvania University (Lexington, Ky.) and his doctor of dental medicine and MBA from Louisville. He began his career in private general dental practice but served part-time public health positions. He joined the Louisville faculty in 1986 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Dentistry. Prior to enrolling in dental school, Williams served as a legislative analyst for the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission for two years. He maintains academic interests in health policy, dental workforce issues and instructional technologies and is active in a number of national and international organizations.

Prior to this appointment, he served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Dentistry. Dr. Rouse served with distinction for 24 active years in the United States Army, concluding his career as Commander and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Army Dental Command, retiring at the rank of Colonel. Dr. Rouse is a 1973 graduate of the Howard University College of Dentistry and completed postdoctoral training in Comprehensive Dentistry at Walson Army Hospital, Fort Dix, New Jersey 1976 – 1978. He received the coveted Howard University College of Dentistry Alumni Achievement Award in 1997 for distinguished service to the country and the profession of Dentistry. He has also been widely recognized by the Howard students, having been awarded 8 student awards during his tenure at the university. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and a member of many professional organizations including the American Dental Association, the National Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, American Association of Dental Boards and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. Dr. Rouse has served on university wide committees and committees in the college. Dr. Rouse is the elected American Dental Education Association [ADEA] representative on the Commission on Dental Accreditation [CODA] for a four year term, an Examiner Consultant to the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners [NERB] and member of the Examination Development Committee.
