Thousands of Oral Care Products Donated to Community Non Profits Serving Children in Need
(Charlotte, NC, March 20, 2016) – In celebration of World Oral Health Day, Charlotte based charity, America’s ToothFairy: National Children’s Oral Health Foundation®, distributed thousands of toothbrushes to local youth serving organizations. The goal of the effort was to raise awareness of the importance of oral health and ensure youth in Charlotte have access to a much needed, but often overlooked tool, a new toothbrush.
The toothbrushes were collected through #GivingTuesday donations matched by Spartanburg based SmileMakers, Inc., as well as community participation in the America’s ToothFairy Smile Drive. The Smile Drive is a national campaign held throughout February, National Children’s Dental Health Month, in which dozens of local businesses and volunteers collected toothbrushes, toothpaste and other oral care products for underserved children.
Charlotte based beneficiaries of these oral healthcare products include:
- The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Greater Charlotte
- Head Start
- Camino Community Center
- Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools McKinney Vento Program
- A Child’s Place
- Ranson Middle School
- Girls on the Run
- Alexander Youth Network
Pediatric dental disease is the most prevalent chronic illness affecting children in the U.S. In North Carolina, nearly half of all five year olds have experienced tooth decay, and children with poor oral health are nearly three times more likely to miss school due to dental pain. Left untreated, severe tooth decay can lead to malnourishment, life threatening secondary infections, and even death.
“Oral health is a critically important issue for the children we serve and an important factor in their lifelong health, self esteem and success,” said Marty Clary, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs for the Charlotte Area. “We are grateful to America’s ToothFairy for this generous donation of toothbrushes and their support for children and
families in our Charlotte community.”
“Having the opportunity to provide much needed oral health education for the Latino community, especially for children, is a blessing,” said Wendy Pascual, Executive Director of Camino Community Center. “This partnership with America’s ToothFairy helps us to accomplish our mission of equipping people to live a healthy life. Thank you, America’s ToothFairy, for the opportunity to serve our community together.”
“America’s ToothFairy is proud to support the work of these local organizations, which provide valuable resources and programs to Charlotte children and families,” said Fern Ingber, America’s ToothFairy President and CEO. “We hope this World Oral Health Day effort will raise awareness of the importance of oral health not only to a child’s overall health, but also their academic performance, confidence and future success.”
