Throughout the month of October, brush up on your dental hygiene knowledge in honor of National Dental Hygiene Month. Maintaining great dental hygiene habits prevents tooth decay and plays a large role in protecting your oral health, which is linked to overall health and wellness. Practicing the Big Four is an easy way to improve your dental hygiene habits at home–brush for two minutes twice a day, floss once a day, rinse with water or mouthwash and repeat the process every day.
As important as taking care of your teeth at home is, it is essential to visit your dentist once every six months to receive a deeper cleaning from a dental hygienist. It can be difficult for even the most diligent brushers and flossers to reach every corner of the mouth, so it is very important that a dental hygienist thoroughly clean away the built-up tartar and plaque to guard against gum disease, cavities and tooth loss.
In addition to conducting your cleaning, dental hygienists have several other important responsibilities to help you maintain and improve your dental hygiene. Those responsibilities include oral cancer screenings, evaluating gum disease, conducting x-rays, making dental impressions, educating patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, and offering nutritional advice for improving oral health. Your dental hygienist is a true Dental HyGENIUS!
It’s always important to practice good dental hygiene habits, and remember to thank your dental hygienist this month for all of his or her hard work in helping you maintain your healthy smile!
