Did you know 1 in 5 children go without dental services? Or that more than 40% of children have dental cavities by the time they reach kindergarten? Children with untreated tooth decay often experience severe pain, perform worse in school, and miss more school days than children without dental problems. Adding to this problem, thousands of children do not have a toothbrush or share one with multiple siblings or family members. This not only increases the risk of germ and illness transmission, it means a child is more likely to suffer the pain, embarrassment, and long-term health risks of untreated tooth decay.
Though tooth decay is the most common chronic untreated disease among children in America, it is also largely preventable. And you can help! Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise vital support for our Smile Drive program, which increases awareness of the importance of oral health and connects children in need with the vital tools for prevention of disease – a toothbrush and toothpaste. Our national Smile Drive distributed more than 300,000 products to children and families in need last year. Help us reach our goal of 350,000 this year!
Smile Drive Charlotte
Last year, thanks to generous donations from Wells Fargo and the Charlotte community in partnership with SHARE Charlotte and #GivingTuesdayCLT, Smile Drive Charlotte delivered more than 82,000 toothbrushes and other oral care products to underserved children in Mecklenburg County. These products stocked the hygiene closets of 77 Title I Schools in Charlotte and supported local non-profit organizations serving children and families in need including A Child’s Place, Bright Blessings, and many others. Help us reach our goal of at least 50,000 products again this year!
Double your Gift!
Between now and Giving Tuesday (November 28), every dollar you donate to the Smile Drive will allow us to provide basic oral care products to children in need. Best of all, our generous partner, SmileMakers, has agreed to double your impact by making a matching donation of toothbrushes.
So, on or before November 28, join the Giving Tuesday movement and give a child a reason to smile!
